Introduction

Bernard Gilpin Primary School is a co-educational county primary school in Houghton le Spring and was built in 1993 to replace separate infant and junior schools. With over 240 pupils aged from 4 to 11, the school represents a diverse community and caters for children of all abilities.

Outdoor Facilities

MothThe school building is set in extensive, landscaped grounds with playgrounds and fields, including football and netball pitches.

We are also fortunate to have a large and rapidly maturing wildlife garden. Areas within the garden include woodland, bird feeding station, wildflower meadow, marsh and pond, an 'outside classroom' with log seating, a sandstone 'quarry' and parkland.

After School Clubs

We currently have the following clubs run by teachers after school:

Football, Hi Five (Netball), Cookery and Computing.

We also have a number of teachers carrying out one-to-one tuition after school and in the Spring term we also hold booster clubs for children about how to take the National Curriculum Tests. These are activities designed to help children with basic skills in Literacy and Maths.

Health Eating

Children in Key Stage 1 presently receive fresh fruit every day as part of the National Fruit Scheme.   More about the National Fruit Scheme (PDF).

Filtered water is available for all school pupils, and each is child is provided with a bottle.
